The multi-function platform allows you to use cycling shoes on one side and on the other side there's a wide platform for when you are wearing ordinary shoes. When I'm wearing cleated shoes and going through some tight turns such as through the railway crossing (where the pedestrians go) I find it handy to use the non-SPD side so that I don't accidentally clip in.
