Good looking solution to them low bar blues
Peter HowardBy: Peter HowardNot all of us cyclists are super fit roadies or mountain-bikers who can accommodate an aggressive bars-below-saddle riding position. For many, the first priority when riding a modern frame is to get the handlebar a little higher and a little closer. This can be difficult when confronted with a threadless steerer tube intentionally cut short at the factory. with only about 20mm of spacers showing below the stem. That's why a few small volume makers of quality everyday bikes cling to the old fashioned threaded steerer with adjustable quill stem. The best solution is a new fork with a long and uncut steerer tube. The rest of us go looking for a steerer tube raiser and possibly a shorter stem, or a hard-to-find new stem raked upwards at 35 or 40 degrees, or an adjustable stem with a hinge in the middle. The trouble with adjustable stems is that they can look ugly with the abrupt dogleg where the hinge is and nobody wants to ride an ugly bike even if the bar position is perfect. This is where the Satori UP2 stem riser shines. The hinge is right on top, in line with the centre axis of the steerer tube which already places your handlebar 45mm higher even with the adjustable stem extension set at zero degrees. Start adjusting the stem and it moves the handlebar higher and closer. The centre of the handlebar will describe an arc all the way from zero degrees to straight up at ninety degrees, though straight up would be a little ridiculous and would make the steering response twitchy. Riders will probably find a more conservative angle that suits them. This stem comes in two lengths, 90mm and 110mm and a buyer could do some simple geometrical drawing on paper with ruler and compasses before deciding which one to order. Mechanically, this Taiwan made stem is pretty good. It appears to be made of several aluminium forgings with no welding evident. The steerer clamp engulfs up to 37mm of the top of the steerer tube and a central bolt into the existing star nut works just like your original top cap bolt to set the preload on your threadless headset. Best to have a few spare headset spacers on hand to arrange about 35mm of exposed steerer to allow room for preload adjustment. The hinge area is quite substantial. The top of the steerer clamp is solid aluminium with the forked end of the stem extension fitting over it. A single clamp bolt releases and engages splined aluminium plugs on each side that mate with matching splines in the centre part of the hinge. The splined plugs are thoughtfully spring loaded so they release equally making adjustment a breeze. The handlebar clamp has a four bolt face plate which is good for a secure connection. The makers have engraved the stem with torque values in Nm for all of the clamp screws, standard practice on stems with any pretensions to quality. A sticker says that the product is not recommended for downhill competition, stunting or aggressive off-roading. I'd hope that anyone who does those activities would have the sense to heed that warning. However, I believe that it is quite solid enough for commuters, tourers and recreational riders who want to be more comfortable on their bike,
